Baku Olympic Stadium
Foundation sealing with injection
Initial Situation
During the construction of the Baku Olympic Stadium, water ingress occurred in the basement areas through expansion joints, pile heads, and construction joints. The objective of the waterproofing works was to permanently prevent water penetration into the underground structures.
The primary waterproofing system consisted of a loose-laid membrane. However, weaknesses developed at various fixing points of the membrane system, allowing groundwater to penetrate into the basement areas under hydrostatic pressure.
Project Challenge
The project required the remediation of several different types of water ingress simultaneously. Active leaks, defective expansion joints, cracks, and water migration paths behind the structure had to be permanently sealed. The waterproofing solution needed to provide long-term protection against groundwater intrusion while meeting the demanding requirements of a major international sports facility.
ARCAN Solution
A comprehensive injection waterproofing concept was implemented to address the various leakage mechanisms.
Active water ingress was initially stopped using HydroBloc 510, ensuring immediate control of flowing water.
Leaking expansion joints were repaired using HydroBloc Rapid 570, providing both rapid water stoppage and long-term sealing performance in movement joints.
To create a continuous waterproof barrier behind the structure, a curtain injection system using HydroBloc Polygel 530 was installed. This formed a watertight membrane between the structure and the surrounding soil.
Cracks and water-bearing defects within the concrete structure were permanently sealed using HydroBloc Inject 583, an elastic injection resin designed for structural crack repair.
Result
The combination of different injection technologies successfully sealed all relevant water pathways. The basement structures of the stadium were permanently protected against groundwater intrusion, restoring the integrity and performance of the foundation waterproofing system.
Special Features
This project required the combination of multiple specialized injection systems to address different leakage mechanisms within one of Azerbaijan’s most important sports venues. The successful completion of the works demonstrates the effectiveness of advanced injection waterproofing technologies for complex below-ground waterproofing applications.
