White City Marriott Boulevard Hotel
Permanent Sealing of Movement and Expansion Joints
Initial Situation
During the construction of the White City Marriott Boulevard Hotel, numerous movement and expansion joints required reliable waterproofing. Due to the size of the building and the expected structural movements caused by temperature changes, settlement, and operational loads, the waterproofing system had to provide long-term flexibility while maintaining complete watertightness.
As one of the largest hotel developments in Baku, the project demanded a durable and high-performance joint sealing solution.
Project Challenge
Movement joints are among the most critical areas in any waterproofing system. Structural movement can place significant stress on conventional sealing materials, leading to potential leakage over time.
The challenge was to create a waterproofing system capable of accommodating continuous movement while ensuring permanent protection against water ingress throughout the service life of the building.
ARCAN Solution
To provide additional protection within the joint areas, HydroTape swellable waterstop strips were installed. The waterstop expands upon contact with water and provides active sealing against water penetration.
For the primary movement joint waterproofing, HydroFlex 275 flexible sealing tape was installed. This highly elastic system is capable of accommodating significant structural movement while maintaining a watertight seal.
HydroFlex 275 was bonded to the substrate using Silipox 826, a specially developed adhesive designed for flexible waterproofing tape systems. Joint connections and overlaps were sealed using HydroFlex 275-S, ensuring a secure and durable connection between individual tape sections.
Result
The combination of swellable waterstops and flexible sealing tape technology provided long-term waterproof protection for all movement and expansion joints within the structure. The system accommodates structural movement while maintaining reliable watertightness and protecting the building against water ingress.
Special Features
This project demonstrates the successful application of advanced movement joint waterproofing systems in one of the largest hotel developments within the White City district of Baku. The combination of active swellable sealing technology and highly flexible joint waterproofing provides a durable solution for structures exposed to continuous movement and demanding service conditions.
