Curtain Injection, Movement Joint Sealing

Initial Situation

During the construction of Trump Tower Baku, the below-ground structures required reliable protection against groundwater ingress. Due to the size and complexity of the high-rise development, the foundation areas and expansion joints were exposed to significant groundwater pressure and represented critical points for potential water penetration. 

To ensure the long-term performance of the structure, specialized waterproofing measures were required for both the foundation system and the movement joints. 

Project Challenge

Foundation structures and expansion joints are among the most critical elements of any high-rise waterproofing system. While expansion joints are designed to accommodate structural movement, they can also become pathways for water ingress if not properly sealed. 

The challenge was to create a continuous waterproof barrier behind the structure while simultaneously providing a durable and flexible waterproofing solution for movement joints exposed to groundwater pressure. 

ARCAN Solution

To waterproof the foundation structures, curtain injections were carried out using HydroBloc Polygel 530. The acrylic gel penetrated the surrounding ground and formed a flexible watertight membrane between the structure and the soil. This effectively sealed water pathways outside the structure and created a long-term waterproof barrier. 

For the rehabilitation and sealing of expansion joints, HydroBloc Rapid 570 was used. The material provided reliable sealing of water-bearing movement joints while maintaining the flexibility required to accommodate structural movement over time. 

The combination of curtain injection waterproofing and expansion joint rehabilitation created a comprehensive waterproofing solution for the entire below-ground structure. 

 

Result 

The waterproofing works provided long-term protection of the foundation structures against groundwater ingress and ensured reliable sealing of the expansion joints. The implemented systems significantly improved the durability and service life of the underground structure.

The Trump Tower Baku project is one of the most prominent high-rise developments in Azerbaijan. The combination of curtain injection waterproofing using HydroBloc Polygel 530 and expansion joint rehabilitation with HydroBloc Rapid 570 demonstrates the effectiveness of modern injection technologies for complex waterproofing challenges in high-rise and below-ground structures. 

Particularly noteworthy is the use of HydroBloc Polygel 530. This acrylic gel has been successfully used worldwide for decades in tunnels, metro systems, foundations, underground structures, and civil engineering projects. Its exceptional flexibility, outstanding penetration capability, and long-term durability make it a proven solution for demanding curtain injection applications exposed to continuous groundwater pressure. 

The successful application at Trump Tower Baku further confirms the suitability of HydroBloc Polygel 530 for prestigious projects requiring the highest standards of safety, durability, and long-term waterproofing performance.
