Metro Station Baku
Waterproofing and Ground Stabilization in Existing Metro Structures
Initial Situation
Several older stations of the Baku Metro experienced persistent water ingress through concrete structures, metal segment linings, construction joints, and other underground interfaces. Continuous groundwater exposure had led to leakage problems that required long-term remediation to maintain the safety and operational reliability of the metro infrastructure.
In addition to stopping active leaks, certain areas required void filling and ground stabilization behind the tunnel lining to improve the overall integrity of the underground structures.
Project Challenge
The rehabilitation works had to be carried out within existing metro facilities where water ingress occurred through a variety of pathways. The waterproofing solution needed to stop active leaks, seal movement joints, and create a permanent waterproof barrier behind the structures while minimizing disruption to metro operations.
Furthermore, areas with voids and insufficient ground support required backfilling and stabilization measures.
ARCAN Solution
A combination of specialized injection systems was used to address the different waterproofing requirements.
Active water ingress was immediately controlled using HydroBloc 510, providing rapid water stoppage even under challenging underground conditions.
Movement joints and movement-related leakage points were repaired using HydroBloc Rapid 570, ensuring both effective water stoppage and durable sealing of movement joints.
To create a continuous waterproof barrier behind the tunnel and station structures, curtain injections were carried out using HydroBloc Polygel 530. The acrylic gel penetrated the surrounding ground and formed a flexible, watertight membrane between the structure and the soil.
Where necessary, additional injection works were performed for backfilling and ground stabilization behind the lining system, improving the long-term stability of the underground structures.
Result
The waterproofing and stabilization measures successfully reduced water ingress throughout the treated areas of the metro system. Active leaks were stopped, movement joints were permanently sealed, and a continuous waterproof barrier was established behind the structures.
The completed works contributed to the long-term protection, durability, and operational reliability of the Baku Metro infrastructure.
Special Features
This project combined water stoppage, expansion joint rehabilitation, curtain injection waterproofing, and ground stabilization within an operating underground transportation network. The successful application demonstrates the versatility of ARCAN injection technologies for complex tunnel and metro rehabilitation projects.
